Space technologies are one of the fastest growing sectors thanks to their unique ability to provide global connectivity, support resilience and digital sovereignty, and expand the limits of humanity beyond our home planet. Therefore, advancing space technology is at the forefront of the worldwide research, education, and innovation agenda. The Space Tech Center brings together world-class experts at Aalborg University on satellite, robotics, and space communication technologies to build capacity, conduct, and promote cutting-edge research, education, and innovation.
Our Mission
While there are numerous research and innovation opportunities in space technologies, the increased global interest in this sector makes it an extremely promising but competitive environment for research and innovation. The goal of the Space Tech Center is to leverage and advance the national and regional research and innovation capacity for accelerating space technology development, establishing strategic space infrastructures, and nurturing key innovation ideas.
TIMELINE: The North Jutland space cluster
1999: Denmark’s first satellite – the Ørsted satellite – is launched.
2003: The first student-built satellite (AAU CubeSat1) is launched.
2007: GomSpace is founded – the first space company in North Jutland.
2014: The first of several major grants from the Innovation Fund for technology development in microsatellites.
2017: Space Inventor is founded.
2018: The world’s largest antenna laboratory opens at AAU.
2020: ESA BIC Denmark is established – the national incubation programme for space start-ups.
2024: The cluster collaboration is formalised in “Space Connect North”.
2026: AAU opens the Space Tech Center.
2026–2029: AAU Tech Lab and renovation.
